Greetings

This blog is about a book by Alice Leone Moats published in 1945.

You can download the book to your kindle or other device here.

In 1943, Alice Leone Moats went to Spain as a correspondent for Collier's Magazine, the New York Herald Tribune and CBS. The big story in Spain was the continued survival of Franco's dictatorship as the Allies surged toward victory in Europe and the wolfram crisis

While in Spain, Leone Moats made contact with members of the French resistance and was smuggled into France several weeks before D-Day. In France, she met downed Allied airmen being smuggled out of the country by the French Resistance, observed the effects of Allied bombing, and met with high ranking Vichy officials.

However, her trip entangled her in legal problems with the US State Department and she found difficulty publishing her story. When No Passport for Paris appeared, the book was met with scorn and indifference.

I'll try to explore the themes of the book and the reasons for its hostile reception. I welcome comments from readers. I am no expert in the history of this period - just an interested reader. I hope my errors will not be too numerous, but I look forward to their [polite] correction.
